Association of Sleep-Disordered Breathing, Sleep Apnea, and Hypertension i n a Large Community-Based Study

چکیده
S LEEP-DISORDERED BREATHING (SDB) and the related clinical syndrome, sleep apnea, have been associated with hypertension in clinical reports since the early 1980s'(1-4) Earlier studies of this association used self-reported history of "snoring" as a surrogate for the presence of sleep apnea. Although some of these studies showed an independent association between snoring and hypertension,(5-7) others found that this relationship may be explained by confounding effects of age, sex, or obesity.(8-11) Two recent studies have demonstrated that self-reported history of snoring is associated with increased incidence of self-reported hypertension in middleaged men" and women." Other studies have used polysomnography (PSG), a more objective measure of SDB. Most of these studies 14-l ' but not all,(20,21) Context Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and sleep apnea have been linked to hypertension in previous studies, but most of these studies used surrogate information to define SDB (eg, snoring) and were based on small clinic populations, or both.

Prospective study of the association between sleep-disordered breathing and hypertension.
BACKGROUND Sleep-disordered breathing is prevalent in the general population and has been linked to chronically elevated blood pressure in cross-sectional epidemiologic studies. We performed a prospective, population-based study of the association between objectively measured sleep-disordered breathing and hypertension (defined as a laboratory-measured blood pressure of at least 140/90 mm Hg or...
متن کاملObstructive sleep apnea syndrome and non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy: a case control study
Background: Sleep apnea is temporary cessation or absence of breathing during sleep. Significant increase in blood pressure is clinically seen in apneic episodes. The aim of this study was to examine sleep apnea syndrome as a risk factor for non- arthritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) in a case control study. Methods: Nineteen NAION patients (9 men and 10 women) and 31 age and ...

Introduction: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). Case Report: Two 53- and 51-year-old male cases with daytime sleepiness and opium abuse and severe sleep apnea and long respiratory events duration (200 and 275 seconds respectively) noted in polysomnography were reported at Ebn-e-Sina and Razavi hospita...
متن کاملSleep-disordered breathing, hypoxia, and risk of mild cognitive impairment and dementia in older women.
CONTEXT Sleep-disordered breathing (characterized by recurrent arousals from sleep and intermittent hypoxemia) is common among older adults. Cross-sectional studies have linked sleep-disordered breathing to poor cognition; however, it remains unclear whether sleep-disordered breathing precedes cognitive impairment in older adults. OBJECTIVES To determine the prospective relationship between s...
